Mix Ratio: Food for Thought
Most colorists know the recommended mix ratio for the brands they’re working with.
Far fewer stop to ask why those numbers exist in the first place.
Why is one color mixed 1:1 while another is mixed 1:1.5?
Why do some systems use 1:2 or even 1:3?
Those ratios may be more than instructions.
They may be part of how the formula is designed to behave.
Think about baking bread.
Flour, water, salt, and yeast are simple ingredients.
But changing the proportions can produce very different kinds of bread.
The ingredients may stay the same, but changing the proportions changes how the entire system behaves.
Haircolor may work in a similar way.
Instead of flour, water, salt, and yeast, haircolor chemists are working with things like alkalizers, dye stuff, and developer.
And just like baking, changing the proportions may change the environment in which everything happens.
Because when you change the amount of developer, you’re not simply adding more developer.
You’re changing the entire chemical environment.
More developer means:
More water.
More oxygen.
Less concentrated dye.
A thinner mixture.
Different movement inside the hair.
In other words, changing the mix ratio may change how the entire system behaves.
Is mix ratio simply a convenience?
Or is it one of the variables haircolor chemists use to influence lift, deposit rate, softness, translucency, brightness, longevity, and even the balance between blending and coverage?
Modern patents suggest that the relationship between alkalizers and hydrogen peroxide matters, meaning performance may depend less on individual ingredients and more on the chemistry that exists after everything is mixed together.
Perhaps the most important formula isn’t what’s inside the tube.
And it isn’t what’s inside the developer bottle.
Perhaps the most important formula is the one that exists after the two are combined.
We don’t have all the answers yet.
But after exploring decades of chemistry papers and patents, one thing seems increasingly clear:
Haircolor behavior may be governed less by categories and more by variables.
Permanent, demi-permanent, acidic, alkaline, and all the other labels we use are useful.
But they may only tell part of the story.
Categories describe.
Variables determine behavior.
Behavior determines results.
Things like how the formula is built, how it’s mixed, and the environment created when everything comes together may all influence how a color behaves.
And maybe that’s why problems in haircolor often begin long before the color is applied.
They begin when the chemical environment is built.
Just because two products belong to the same category doesn’t mean they’ll behave the same.
And just because two products belong to different categories doesn’t mean they’ll behave differently.
